Over 1,000 boats participated in a flotilla on the Thames on 3rd June, 2012. The event was the largest flotillas ever beating the previous record of 327 boats in Bremerhaven, Germany in 2011. On the lead was the Gloriana, the £1m row barge. It was rowed by 18 oarsmen and women. The Duke of York used Havengore. This is the same vessel that had carried the coffin of Sir Winston Churchill during the state funeral in 1965. On board were the daughters of the Duke, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie and the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

The Spirit of Chartwell joined the flotilla close to Albert Bridge. On board was The Queen joined by the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. The vessel was lavishly decorated with about 10,000 flowers and with replica carvings. The colour scheme used included majestic colours of red, gold and purple. The design had the grace and elegance of the rich decoration of royal barges of the 17th and 18th centuries.

About one million spectators had lined on the banks of the Thames. To everyone’s delight the pageant finished with the bascules of the bridge lowering and the fireworks shot from the upper deck. What amplified the celebrations were the crafts on the river sounding their horns!
